LOCKJAW #2 was published yesterday. Once again, it was an enjoyable and humorous story. Last issue, Lockjaw traveled to Brooklyn to save his relative Bixby from an army of hostile hamsters. He got teamed up with a D-list superhero named D-Man, who'd recently lost his powers and his personal drive. Issue #1 ended with Lockjaw and D-Man teleporting off to the Savage Land -- and finding themselves face to face with Ka-Zar and Zabu.
D-Man and Lockjaw spent much of this issue exploring the Savage Land with Ka-Zar and Zabu -- learning that Ka-Zar's makeshift farm has been recently savaged by something called the Beast. The Beast isn't a hunter like most Savage Land creatures. Apparently, he's a murderer who kills for reasons other than feeding.
We don't see the return of the hostile hamsters -- though our four heroes end up battling the Beast. Well, Ka-Zar and the animals fight the Beast. D-Man just gets in one good kick before the battle is resolved.
We end up meeting another one of Lockjaw's mysterious relatives in this issue. Apparently, the hostile hamsters confronted him off-panel, but he took care of them with ease. This guy isn't as sweet as Lockjaw or Bixby. I'm still not sure if these bulldogs are Lockjaw's pups, or brothers, or even other-dimensional counterparts. But we learned that Lockjaw is receiving signals from another dimension, which is driving his current adventures.
It looks like we're going to meet another version of Lockjaw in LOCKJAW #3, as well as an unexpected spider-powered hero. I really can't wait to see these two characters interact with Lockjaw and D-Man. I'm hoping that we'll gain some more insight into Lockjaw's adventure in this issue -- and possibly even his origins!
"Call of the Wild" features writing by Daniel Kibblesith, penciling by Carlos Villa, inking by Roberto Poggi, coloring by Chris O'Halloran, and lettering by VC's Clayton Cowles.
