It's post-Election Day 2017 in America. Democratic voters throughout the country pushed back against last year's GOP gains, which is good. Hopefully we'll keep that momentum going during the next election. I was happy over all with the results of the election. And even though Iowa City had its own city council campaign happening, my eyes were focused down south towards Muscatine, IA!
Over the past year, we've watched as the Muscatine City Council has pushed through impeachment efforts against its Democratic mayor, Diana Broderson. They successfully impeached her last spring and then a district court judge overruled the impeachment process, arguing that the Council improperly acted as investigator, prosecutor, and judge.
Nearly one year after this all began, the voters of Muscatine overwhelmingly voted in favor of Mayor Broderson's re-election bid -- by 59%!
Not only that, but they voted against the two incumbents from the City Council who had been up for re-election. Councilman Scott Natvig lost his seat with only 35% of the vote and Councilman Michael Rehwaldt lost his seat with only 28% of the vote. Councilman Bob Bynum is also leaving the City Council, having chosen against another campaign for health reasons.
