BBC News reported that "Doctor Who" will gain a new companion later this month -- who is an openly gay woman! Bill Potts (played by Pearl Mackie) is being billed as the show's first openly gay companion...

... Which really doesn't jive with previous companion Captain Jack (played by John Barrowman). That character is noted in the BBC article, but somehow he wasn't a traditional companion. As compared to Bill, who will be a full-time companion.

Mackie confirms that Bill is a lesbian, but thinks that people shouldn't treat this like a huge deal here in the 21st Century. But she thinks it's important for people to see gay people represented on the show, as well as black people.

The new season of "Doctor Who" will premier on BBC One and BBC America on April 15th.
