The third episode of "Riverdale" aired last night on The CW and this series continues to impress me. Last week's episode ended with Cheryl Blossom confessing her guilt to the police. Turns out that she wasn't confessing his involvement with his murder, but instead confessed that she'd assisted Jason with running away from time on the day of his disappearance and one week before he was actually killed!
Meanwhile, Archie wants to come forward and tell the police that he heard a gunshot on the morning of Jason Blossom's disappearance. However, Ms. Grundy continues to guilt him into silence. After all, the two are having an affair and she's his teacher. Eventually, Archie will do the right thing. But this Grundy storyline promises to blow up next week -- if the previews are to be believed!
Meanwhile, this episode is mainly about Veronica and Betty. Veronica goes on a date with one of Riverdale High's football heroes: Chuck Clayton. The date goes well, but Veronica finds herself the victim of online bullying by Chuck and other members of the football team. She's accused of doing a "sticky maple" with him (look it up on urban dictionary). He refuses to come clean about their date, which just invites Veronica's fury.
Turns out that this is part of a larger system of abuse by the men on the Riverdale football team. They have a shame-book, filled with the athletes' sexual exploits -- some real, some imagined. Veronica and Betty -- who's just resurrected Riverdale High's newspaper -- have decided to seek justice for the various girls who've been attacked by the football team. By the way, one of those girls if Ethel Muggs (played by actress Shannon Purser) who's been falsely accused of sleeping with several of the players and who has agreed to come out publicly with her story.
Meanwhile, Archie finally gets to collaborate with Josie and the Pussycats, where they create an original song called "All For Me." I wrote about that here. You should check it out if you get the chance. It's really good!
Even though the ratings aren't the best, "Riverdale" is a really compelling program. Do yourself a favor and check out the first three episodes on the CW website and then begin watching the show every Thursday night at 8:00 PM CST.
