"Sesame Street" has launch an educational and awareness initiative about autism (you can check out the materials here). Part of that program is a new character named Julia, a "girl who has bright orange hair and big green eyes" and who is also diagnosed with autism.
When I originally read about Julia, I assumed that she would be appearing as a Muppet on the television program, but so far she seems limited to a book called "We're Amazing, 1, 2, 3!"
Julia displays some of the quirky characteristics often associated with autism. She lines up her toys in perfect order. Her social skills are a bit off. Her sensory experiences sometimes becoming overwhelming.
But she seems like a sweet little girl. Plus, Elmo ad Abby both like her, so how bad can she be??
