The Iowa House is mulling a bill that, if passed, would take away the ability of Iowa voters to check off one box and allow them to vote for all candidates within one political party or another. Instead, voters would be required to vote for each individual candidate. This bill is being sponsored by Republican Rep. Peter Cownie of West Des Moines. This Gazette article indicates that lawmakers are split over this bill.
I'm not sure why the Legislature would want to eliminate straight-ticket voting. If someone really wants to vote for candidates from multiple parties -- something I've done before -- they can choose to vote for each individual candidate. But why should the Legislature care if someone wants to check off a box that would effectively allow them to vote for all Republican candidates or all Democratic candidates?
Personally, my main problem with straight-party voters is that they check off the box and then never follow up on other election issues like judicial retention votes that have nothing to do with political party. But I still don't support eliminating straight-ticket voting because of that.
What do you think? Should Iowa get rid of straight-party voting? Why or why not?
