Oregon Cake Maker Refuses to Work With Lesbians // Declines Their Money

Aaron Klien of Sweet Cakes in Gresham, OR, is a devout Christian business owner who will bake "a wedding cake or for ANY occasion" -- unless that occasion is a lesbian wedding. That is the one occasion that they will not do cakes for despite their repeated website assertion:

Anyway, Sweet Cakes is in the news because they declined service to a repeat customer who was planning her double-bride wedding. Klein reportedly told them that he couldn't sell any cakes to the couple because "they were an abomination to the Lord" (something he later disputed to a KATU reporter). The couple were refused business -- just as he has denied business to other local gay and lesbian couples -- because of his Christian beliefs. It was unclear from either the news article or from the website if Sweet Cakes refuses to provide cakes to non-Christian customers or if his religious beliefs only get directed towards gays and lesbians.

The couple wrote a letter of complaint to the Oregon Attorney General's office and there is now an investigation about whether or not Sweet Cakes violated the Oregon Equality Act of 2007, which prohibits discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. That particular statute includes public accommodation such as private businesses.

I have written about Christian cake-makers who refuse to work with gay and lesbian couples in the past (here and here). I still don't understand why a small business would refuse to work with any customer and deny themselves potentially hundreds of dollars. They are not validating each couple's wedding. They are selling cakes. Then again, who wants to pay good money to a business who views their new family with disdain?

I ultimately believe that the business owner should have the right to refuse service to customers. But then they need to stop complaining when those unworthy individuals tell their friends (and their friends and their friends) about their poor treatment. And then we need to spread the word about really great cake-makers and pro-gay businesses who actually want to work with us and provide good quality services.
